Trump Threatens to Seize Iran’s Kharg Island but Questions Support for Military Action

Trump Raises Possibility of Taking Control of Iranian Oil Hub

U.S. President Donald Trump said on November 11 that the United States could consider taking control of Iran’s Kharg Island and other major oil infrastructure sites, but later suggested he was uncertain whether Americans would support such a large military operation.

Trump first made the comments through his social media platform, where he claimed that controlling Iranian oil facilities could allow the United States to influence Iran’s energy sector.

“At some point in the near future, we will take Kharg Island and other Iranian oil infrastructure sites and take complete control of their oil and gas markets,” Trump wrote, comparing the idea to previous U.S. actions involving Venezuela.

Trump Later Expresses Doubt Over Military Move

Despite his earlier remarks, Trump appeared more cautious during a later interview with Fox News. He said that while targeting Kharg Island remained one of his preferred options, he was unsure whether the American public supported another major overseas military campaign.

“I don’t know if the American people are determined. I think they want to see us come home,” Trump said.

Trump also indicated that diplomatic negotiations with Iran were still possible, saying Tehran wanted to reach an agreement and that he personally supported making a deal.

“I want to reach an agreement now, more than I did three or four weeks ago,” he added.

Why Kharg Island Is Strategically Important

Kharg Island, located in the northern Persian Gulf, is one of Iran’s most important energy facilities. The island serves as a major oil export terminal and handles a large portion of Iran’s crude oil shipments.

Because of its importance to Iran’s economy, control of the island has long been viewed as a move that could severely affect Tehran’s ability to export oil.

Pentagon Reportedly Prepared Plans Months Ago

According to officials familiar with U.S. military discussions, plans involving a possible operation against Kharg Island had reportedly been prepared months earlier.

However, the option was delayed because of serious risks, including the need for a large number of ground forces and the possibility of heavy casualties.

Military officials have considered such an operation a last-resort option because it could significantly escalate tensions and potentially expand the conflict.

Military Option Remains Uncertain

Although Trump has publicly discussed the possibility of targeting Iranian oil facilities, no final decision has been announced.

Officials continue to weigh diplomatic solutions against military options as Washington evaluates the risks of a wider confrontation with Iran.
