Singer, songwriter and producer Leon Thomas is set to receive the prestigious ASCAP Vanguard Award, marking another major achievement in his rapidly rising music career. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) announced Tuesday that the three-time Grammy winner will be honored for his contributions to shaping the future of R&B music through his creativity, songwriting and innovative sound.
Thomas will receive the award on June 25 during ASCAP’s private, invitation-only celebration recognizing top hip-hop, R&B and gospel songwriters in Los Angeles. The Vanguard Award is presented to ASCAP members whose work is helping influence and redefine the music industry. Previous recipients include Victoria Monét, Migos and Janelle Monáe.
ASCAP praised Thomas for his growing impact on contemporary R&B and his ability to blend traditional influences with modern production styles.
“Leon Thomas is one of R&B’s most creative forces today and is reshaping its sound with his boundary-breaking artistry,” Nicole George-Middleton, ASCAP executive vice president and head of creative membership, said in a statement. “His passion, creativity and undeniable talent have established him as a defining voice of this generation.”
Thomas began his entertainment career as a child performer on Broadway, appearing in productions including “The Lion King.” He later gained widespread recognition for his role on Nickelodeon’s popular television series “Victorious,” where he showcased both his acting and musical talents.
From Television Star to Award-Winning Music Producer
After the conclusion of “Victorious,” Thomas shifted his focus toward music production and songwriting, quickly building a strong reputation within the industry. Over the years, he collaborated with several major artists including Ariana Grande, Drake, Chris Brown and Kehlani, helping craft chart-topping songs and successful projects.
His work behind the scenes earned widespread industry respect and eventually led to major award recognition. In 2024, Thomas received ASCAP’s R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap Song of the Year award for co-writing SZA’s hit song “Snooze.” The track became one of the most successful R&B songs of recent years and also won a Grammy Award.
Music critics have credited Thomas with bringing a fresh and experimental sound to R&B while maintaining strong emotional storytelling and soulful musical elements. His songwriting style and production techniques have made him one of the most sought-after creative artists in the genre.
Thomas later stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist with the release of his sophomore album “Mutt” in 2024. The project became a commercial and critical success, helping establish him as one of the leading new voices in modern R&B music.
The album’s title track climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Radio Songs chart and later earned double-platinum certification, reflecting its widespread popularity among listeners. Another single from the album, “Yes It Is,” recently achieved gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Grammy Success and Growing Global Recognition
“Mutt” further elevated Thomas’ status in the music industry by earning Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song “Vibes Don’t Lie.” Industry experts said the album demonstrated his ability to balance classic R&B influences with modern sounds that appeal to younger audiences.
In recent months, Thomas has continued expanding his musical career with the release of his EP “PHOLKS,” which has received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. He is also touring select markets alongside Bruno Mars as part of “The Romantic Tour,” exposing his music to larger international audiences.
Fans and music industry observers view the ASCAP Vanguard Award as recognition of Thomas’ growing influence and long-term potential within contemporary music. Many believe his success story — from Broadway performer to television actor and now Grammy-winning artist and producer — reflects his versatility and dedication to artistic growth.
The award ceremony in Los Angeles is expected to bring together some of the biggest names in hip-hop, gospel and R&B music as ASCAP celebrates artists shaping the future of the industry.
