The epicenter of this intense earthquake was located in a sparsely populated highland area in the city of Nagku in northern Tibet, about 400 kilometers from the Tibetan capital Lhasa. Videos released by local state media showed people fleeing their homes and taking shelter in vehicles parked outside or on the roadside. A local resident said he was woken up with a jolt and heard the house shaking and creaking.
Official media reported that local firefighters and rescue teams were dispatched to the disaster area.
Data from the China Seismological Network Center shows that this 7.0 magnitude earthquake was followed by several aftershocks of 3 to 4 magnitude in the surrounding areas.
In 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Yushu, in neighboring Qinghai province, killing at least 2,698 people and leaving about 300 missing.
