Commonwealth of Mississippisenator The election unexpectedly reached a deadlock. It has been more than 40 years since a local Democratic senator was elected. However, on the morning of November 5, it was still difficult to decide the winner between incumbent Republican Senator Hyde-Smith and his Democratic opponent Colon, with only a 1% margin between the two sides.
By the morning of the 5th, out of nearly 1 million votes cast, Scott Colome was only ahead of Cindy Hyde-Smith by about 1,720 votes. The progress of counting is around 98%.
If Colon wins, he will become Mississippi’s first Democratic U.S. senator since John C. Stennis was last elected in 1982.
Of more historical importance is that of Blanche of Colon. He is also expected to become the first African-American federal senator from Mississippi since Bruce.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that Mississippi’s African-American population is approximately 40%, making it the state with the highest African-American population in the United States. African-American voters overwhelmingly support the Democratic Party and are reported to have voted enthusiastically in this election.
In an interview with The Washington Post in October, Colon said that the Democratic Party has generally performed poorly in Mississippi in the past because the Republican Party has repeatedly won large victories in recent years, causing the Democratic Party to shift resources elsewhere.
