Agence France-Presse reported that 16 members of Greenland’s parliament (Inatsitsertut) voted in favor of the agreement, seven abstained and none voted against it.

Trump signed an agreement with Greenland and Denmark in late September that will allow the United States to build two new military bases in Greenland, potentially resolving the standoff over the strategic and mineral-rich island. Greenland is an autonomous region of Denmark.

The agreement also prevents countries outside the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) from entering Greenland’s strategic areas, with the aim of preventing China or Russia from gaining influence in Greenland, especially through investment channels.

The Danish Parliament is expected to approve the agreement on November 19.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, he has repeatedly stressed that the United States needs to control Greenland for strategic reasons, triggering high alert among NATO allies Denmark and other partners.
