Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara once again said at the press conference after the cabinet meeting on the 6th that Japan’s position on Taiwan has not changed since the Japan-China Joint Statement of 1972.

At the time, Takachi said in response to questions from the Budget Committee of the House of Representatives of Japan that if “something happens in Taiwan” including the use of warships and the use of force, it could become an “existential crisis situation” for Japan. According to Japan’s current security legal system, the right of collective self-defense can be exercised. Due to this statement, there was continuous tension in Japan-China relations.

NHK reported that Kihara said: “The government will make decisions based on the specific situation and comprehensively integrate all information. The government’s position has always been consistent.” He further said, “The government’s position on Taiwan is the same as that stated in the Japan-China Joint Statement of 1972. There has been no change. China is an important neighbor. We will comprehensively promote strategic and mutually beneficial relations, communicate on common issues, and establish constructive and stable relations.”

Regarding China’s request for Takaichi to withdraw his statement, Kihara only said: “There has been no change in the government’s position that has been repeatedly stated.”
