Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to grow stronger, will it cause human extinction? This is not worrying. A former engineer at Google and Microsoft recently reported that AI could destroy the human race in the next ten years. He believes the chances are higher than 50%, and he has “even given up on saving for retirement.”
The New York Post reports that Nate Soares, a former AI security expert who worked at Google and Microsoft, believes there is more than a 50% chance that AI will cause species extinction in the next ten years. He said, “This technology should not be developed on a large scale. We do not want to see AI trying to mimic or even surpass human intelligence. That should not be the goal.”
Soares explained that AI should be applied like finding a cure for cancer, rather than constantly developing itself. He compared the development of AI to trains and cars, saying: “Imagine a horse looking at a car and thinking: ‘There are a lot of things this car still can’t do.’ But when we look at AI, it is getting better and better in all aspects, completing longer and longer tasks.” Soares believes that the rapid and powerful development of AI will eventually lead to the extinction of the human race.
Soares admitted that when he was working at Google, he had $400,000 in his account, but that he had not saved any money for at least ten years. He revealed that it was his strong belief that AI would eventually exterminate humanity that made him abandon saving. Soares said humans’ fear of AI should be the same as that of the nuclear bomb. He said: “It may be the first time that we are living in the shadow of people all dying at the same time, but for me personally, we are living in the shadow of plague and war. The only thing you can do is do your best and live well.”
