Packaging/Why do Spanish high-speed rail accidents occur frequently? 115 died in 2 accidents in 9 months

A major incident happened in Spain on 28 Octoberhigh speed rail In the collision, a high-speed train of state-owned railway company Renfe hit a privately owned Ireo train parked on the tracks, killing at least 69 people and injuring hundreds. It was Spain’s worst rail disaster in 10 years.

The preliminary investigation into the accident pointed to a failure of the signaling system and an error in decision-making by the central dispatch center to release the following vehicles. What is even more worrying is that in January this year, another high-speed rail accident occurred in Spain, in which 46 people died. In just nine months, another major accident occurred, which also raised questions on railway safety and management responsibility.

Two high-speed trains collided at about 8:53 a.m. on the morning of October 28 between Los Ybenes and Urada in the province of Toledo in central Spain, with both trains traveling south from the capital Madrid towards Sevilla.

The trains involved include AVE high-speed trains operated by state-owned railway company Renfe and trains from private operator Iryo. There were 147 people on board the Erio train and 397 people on the Renfe train. At that time, due to a glitch in the security system, the Erio train stopped on the track. The Renfe train behind it failed to brake in time and collided directly with the rear of the preceding train, causing some carriages to derail.

The vehicles were seriously deformed by the violent impact and some even fell down the embankment. Passenger Miguel recalled that he first heard a huge roar, followed by a massive crash. This process lasted for about 10 seconds and he felt as if the train was about to derail.

Ignacio Rellano, another passenger on the Renfe train, said the train stopped on the track briefly, and then collided after it resumed operations. The vehicle tilted to one side and luggage and mobile phones scattered here and there.

After the accident, rescue workers continued to search for survivors and bodies in the severely damaged vehicle. The death toll rose from dozens initially to 69 on the 29th, while many more were injured. The Spanish government declared three days of national mourning and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also visited the scene and promised to find out the cause of the crash.
