The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today announced that it will ban 2 products containing sugarhuawei Surveillance chip devices manufactured by its subsidiary HiSilicon have entered the US market. This is the first time the FCC has used this power under the new rules.
Reuters reported that the US Federal Communications Commission said what was banned was a driving recorder and a wireless image transmitter, both of which use HiSilicon chips. The FCC reported that HiSilicon claims that this chip is “specifically designed for the surveillance market” and has a built-in “face detection algorithm.”
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said that the surveillance chips inside these imaging devices were manufactured by companies on the national security blacklist and “pose a clear and unacceptable risk to the country and its people.”
Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Reuters could not immediately contact Haisi.
The FCC voted in July this year to ban the sale in the United States of devices containing critical hardware produced by Chinese companies on the national security blacklist. The Trump administration has launched a sweeping crackdown on Chinese technology equipment.
